Cruising the Rhine and Moselle Rivers

November 2024

One of my dream trips was a river cruise during Christmas Market season in Europe, and fortunately I was able to realize that dream thanks to AmaWaterways. We began our trip with a pre-cruise 3-day stay in Paris, France (with a day trip to Normandy). Ama then whisked us via a high speed train (195 mph top speed!) to Luxembourg for a short tour of the historical part of the city, then on to Wasserbillig to board our ship, the AmaPrima for a 7-day cruise on the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. The ship was beautifully decorated for the Christmas holiday, adding to the fun.

The ship stopped at various towns along the rivers, both in Germany and France. At each stop, Ama had excursions organized (included) for all types of travelers - whether you wanted a gentle pace, a 'regular' pace, or even hiking and/or biking excursions for those who wanted a faster pace.

Not all towns had their Christmas Markets open yet, but regardless every town was festively decorated. The Christmas Markets we did get to visit did not disappoint.  It's hard not to have a fun time when glühwein is available at the markets!

The scenery along the rivers was also amazing to view. From the experience of passing through locks along the rivers, to sailing through the 40-mile long Rhine River with over 40 castles and vineyards, sailing along the rivers was a highlight of the trip.

The ship provided an intimate setting, where mingling with fellow passengers made us feel like we were sailing with friends. The food was delightful in presentation, but even better tasting! Regional wines and beer was included with lunch and dinner, and the well-stocked bar in the lounge, along with the talented musician, kept the fun alive well into the evening.

The cruise ended in Basel, Switzerland, however, it wasn't the end for us. We continued with Ama's post-cruise add-on to Lucerne and Zürich Switzerland for a total of 4 more days. The hotels, arranged by Ama, were spectacular, especially in Lucerne, where the view from our room looked over Lake Lucerne with mountains in the background. It was picture perfect!
